Chestnut Hill Waterworks Biological Laboratory is built.

It is located at the Chestnut Hill High Service Station. The first municipal water testing laboratory in the U.S., it is operated George Whipple, under the direction of Desmond Fitzgerald. The lab pioneers research into removing bacteria from municipal water systems.
